Design Thinking: How to Create Mobile Apps that are Actually Useful

Sponsored by: Deloitte

Floral Hall A1

Abstract:

Too many mobile apps and web sites still get built to meet the specifications of IT organizations without enough attention to whether they are genuinely useful to citizens. This approach can lead to users rejecting your app and choosing to call your help desk or come to your office instead—defeating the purpose of building the app.

In this session, you’ll learn the highlights of the design thinking process from one of our professional user experience designers. Then you’ll have a chance to divide into teams and work together to come up with a design solution to a real-world problem. You’ll empathize with your user’s needs, define a problem to solve, and then ideate on solutions. Teams will share their ideas and see examples of real apps that have been designed using this process. This learn-by-doing approach aims to give you a solid appreciation for a design methodology that works across web and mobile app efforts. We hope participants will come away with a sense that government apps and websites can be products that users don’t just tolerate but actually LOVE
